Mars is the fourth planet of the solar system and the second smallest one. It is nicknamed the red planet and Mars after the Roman god of War (in Greek: Ades).
In total, there were 18 successful missions to Mars, one named Opportunity sent in 2004 and the other one Curiosity which landed on August, 5th 2012.
On Mars, you can find rocks, rust (dust), storms and volcanoes. Furthermore, there is water on Mars, but only in the shape of ice.
The mission to Mars is organised by the not-for-profit organization Mars One. They want to establish a permanent human colony on Mars. The Mars One Foundation starts to search for candidates, from all nations, who want to go on Mars. The mission will start in 2023 and will be streamed on the Internet. The flight to Mars will take seven months. The overall project will cost 6 billion dollars. Each crew will be made up of 2 men and 2 women who will decide if they want children or not. For many people, this experiment is unethical/immoral.

Watch the video and find out the qualities of an astronaut
LESSON
EXPLORERS WANTED : Nasa and Artemis.
The document is a promotional video that is about hiring astronauts. It is issued from NASA (the US spatial organisation) and Artemis. In the video, some astronauts are being interviewed and talk about their experience and the qualities/skills required to be an astronaut. For example, technical/operational skills, collaboration and team spirit. You also need to be fun and humble. Also, you must be versatile (a plumber, an electrician, mechanics etc.). The video is efficient (working) because of the nice and smiling people as well as (also) the visual and entertaining/dynamic music in the background.
Artemis is a spatial programme to settle a permanent colony on the moon that works as a satellite for future spatial missions.
Josh Richards is an Australian physicist, engineer who works in stand-up comedy (stage comedian). He’s applying for Mars One Mission and thinks he could be the perfect candidate because he has many skills and loves communicating. He also believes in the mission and is passionate about space. He’s an open-minded (tolerant) person with a big sense of humour. He mentions Buzz Aldrin (a former/old astronaut who set his foot on the Moon and says that feelings are as important as technical skills. Josh Richards wants to pave the way for others to settle/colonise Mars.
Open-minded: tolerant
To pave the way = to open the way (to be the first)
